Use of VFW Logo, Name, and Emblems

Trademark Authorization & Brand Compliance

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) holds exclusive rights to its name, logos, emblems, and the Cross of Malta. Any use of these assets must be in compliance with national guidelines and may require prior written authorization from the Quartermaster General.

When Is Authorization Required?

Submit the authorization form if you plan to:

  • Use any VFW trademarks on commercial products (shirts, mugs, banners, etc.)
  • Work with a third-party vendor (outside the VFW Store)
  • Modify or apply VFW branding in non-standard formats

You do not need to submit this form if:

  • You are a Post, District, or Department using logos for non-commercial internal materials, such as brochures, event flyers, websites, or digital communications.
  • You are using official logo files obtained from the VFW Communications Department for approved activities.

How to Submit a Trademark Authorization Request

  1. Download the Form
    Download VFW Trademark Authorization Request (PDF)
  2. Complete the Form
    You'll need to specify:
    • The logo or name you want to use (e.g., VFW logo, Cross of Malta, etc.)
    • Item and purpose
    • When and where the items will be used
    • Quantity and file format
    • Color version (1-color, 2-color, full color)
    • Use of proceeds (if applicable)

VFW Brand Guidelines: Key Requirements

Uphold the integrity of the brand by following these official standards:

  • Use only approved logo versions (full color is preferred)
  • Do not stretch, crop, alter, or recolor the logo
  • Respect minimum logo sizes:
    • 1.25” for print
    • 100px for screen
  • Maintain required clear space around the logo (½ the height of the logo)

  • Black (PMS BLACK C) – HEX: #231F20
  • White – HEX: #FFFFFF

The Cross of Malta

VFW Cross of Malta

The Cross of Malta is a highly respected and protected emblem. It should be used only in official contexts such as:

  • VFW caps, pins, awards, signage, and select items from the VFW Store
  • Not to be altered or used in casual or unofficial branding

For Merchandise

Your first stop for custom items should always be the VFW Store or call 1-833-VFW-VETS.
If the VFW Store cannot fulfill your request, you may apply to use an alternate vendor with approval via the form.

Use of the VFW’s trademarks without approval is a violation of federal law. The VFW’s marks are registered and protected under U.S.C. Title 36, Sections 230101–230107.
